Or as we learned in graduate school, the scum also rises. My neighbour, who owns several properties, says a landlord will give a bad tenant a good review to a prospective landlord because 1) they want to get rid of the tenant 2) they're afraid the tenant will sue. Also, employers in D.C. will say very little about past or present employees for the same reason. Not sure how it is in other states. Really, it's unfair to good employees and good tenants.
