DAY 278

DAY 48

DAY 47

Still recovering from an intense high school reunion weekend. When I was in high school I had no idea how many things life would hand us, good and bad. Kind of like Salvador Dali's Railway Station at Perpignan:

Weather started out cold and nasty but improved, Dow down but other indexes up, gas prices up, too. The Chilean miners are out about two months ahead of schedule, so maybe other things will improve faster than expected.

A guy was killed on Ninth Street – evidently suffered trauma. That’s what the diagnoses on my doctor’s bill says: “trauma.” I am not hurting as much physically, but unable to shake this cold I caught last month.

So far no one has killed anybody.

DAY 268
DAY 38

High school reunion next weekend. It will be a three-day thing: "casual" evening, "formal reception" and "recovery party." The casual evening and recovery party pose the most problems, fashion-wise. How do I look cool AND pretending I don't care how I look because I AM cool?

Dow closed at over 11,000 for the first time since May. Weather started out cold but improved. Gas prices are up (boo) but there's a 30-cent difference between NW and NE DC.

I am trying to keep it together. D has a cold, which he said he got from his daughter. Hope the rest of us don't get it.
Fatso should have her own TV show -- "Everybody Hates Fatso." Kind of like in the "Everybody Loves Raymond" vein.

DAY 265

DAY 35

Cops everywhere, but to what avail?

A couple hours ago a guy had a seizure at Starbucks on Columbia Rd.
1) No cop in the usual place in front of Madame's Organ
2) "Community Police" office next to the Suntrust unoccupied.
3) Found an illegally parked cop car in front of the Bank of America. Found the officer inside making a deposit.
Where are emergency personnel when you need them?

Earlier this morning a woman was hit by a car and killed on Connecticut Avenue. Not sure how close I was at the time. Evidently no cops around then, either:

Wednesday, October 06, 2010

DAY 264

DAY 34

Cops out in full force, including PEO's. Maybe because of last week's gang shootings? Where were they when I needed them? It is eerily quiet outside. Maybe because it's cold?

Sunday, October 03, 2010

Went to Taste of Bethesda yesterday.

Two of my favourites were Morton's and Ruth's Chris, although the bread on which they served their sliders overpowered the meat. Delhi Dhaba's butter chicken was good, but why did all the Indian restaurants serve virtually the same thing? One can only eat so many samosas in one day. Just Cakes Cupcakes were good, as were Ben and Jerry's and Gifford's ice cream. One cookie place (I forget which one) made reasonably good, if a little doughy "almond rounds."

The big disappointment was the Burger Joint's sliders. I LOVED the last burger I had there, however, the sliders were luke warm, served on cold bread, which minimized the flavour. We know you can do better!
DAY 261

DAY 31

It was two years ago yesterday I adopted my baby Perpetua. Got them both blessed today. There were three services near me, at two Episcopal and one Congregational church. The minister remembered us. Went home feeling better than I have after church in a long time.

Market ended up, weather ranging from horrific to fairy-tale-like, gas prices appear to be up in Virginia, but ok in DC.

Got a call from my attorney -- at least will be having some closure.

Used my Blockbuster Rewards to rent “The Golden Compass,” for which the Catholic League called a boycott. The author of the book apparently wanted to “kill G-d,” impossible to do, and enough people took him seriously. Never mind there are references to tolerance, “free inquiry,” truth, some substance called “dust” and to prophecies. IMO no worse than the Harry Potter books, contested by the Episcopal pictures, more compelling than “the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” and lots of pretty pictures to boot.

Beautiful weather, stock market up, gas prices okay. Teresa Lewis was executed this week. Getting over an awful cold, having a lot of physical pain. Hurts like crazy when I cough. If it were my left shoulder I would swear I was having a heart attack.

Did a search on "Dundalk Barbie" and got this:

Also found one on other Maryland Barbies:

I would personally change "Cabin John Barbie" to "Takoma Park Barbie" (Does not want or need a Ken doll)

Some Virginia Barbies:

Except "Falls Church Barbie" is not accurate. It should read "has a poor self-image, hates Falls Church, hates herself more, wanted nothing more than to leave Falls Church, and now fears she may have to move back..."

A couple notable primary upsets yesterday. It looks as though Vincent Gray will be the new mayor of DC. Paid my property taxes today.

Ok, DC, let's see our tax dollars being put to GOOD use. If you had, those kids might be behind bars now. If DC cops had been where they were supposed to be I might not have been robbed, period.

A re-write of last Friday's post:

At about 3:00 AM Eastern Time Friday I was robbed in front of Tryst on 18th Street in Adams Morgan. The suspects were three African American males and one female, apparently in their late teens or early 20's, medium to dark complected. One of then was wearing a rhinestone pendant around his neck. They took my ATM card, cell phone, keys and Starbucks card. All were in a purple velvet drawstring bag.

The female was very petite, may have scratch marks on her arms, neck or face. The males were roughly five feet seven inches. At least one had braids. One was missing a tooth. They were last seen headed eastbound on Columbia Road.
If you have any information, please call (202) 673-6815 and ask for Detective Luna. the case # is 127287

DAY 222

Eight Myths Romantic Comedies Perpetuate:

1.You just know he's the one — and you're right: We've probably all felt this at some point, and most of us have been proven wrong.

2.Change yourself, and he'll fall head over heels: How often has the bland girl put on a dress and makeup only to dazzle the guy who didn't know her name 30 minutes ago. It's only like the entire plot of Cinderella!

3.Sex solves problems: Unless the problem is he'd like to have sex right now, then all it will provide is distraction.

4.Playing hard to get works: In reality, acting disinterested makes him think you're not interested. He may want you, but he'll probably be too scared to act.

5.If you run, he'll follow: Unless he's very confident or very clueless, he's probably not going to make a fool out of himself. Most guys would sooner sit home brokenhearted.

6.You don't need his number: He always gets the number in rom-coms, and he always calls. And if he doesn't, he has a reason that somehow will make you love him more.

7.Love changes him: Love can conquer anything, right? Pot habits. Video game obsessions. Irregular bathing. Not likely. He may change for a while, but lasting change really needs to be made for the self and not another.

8.Love knows no socioeconomic bounds: Even if we're so magnanimous that we can overlook major class, education, and money differences, there's another person's insecurities involved. Not to mention money is one of the most common things couples fight over.

Two more myths:

1) A person who is unappealing at the beginning of the standard 90-minute feature film will be more appealing before the credit roll. Wrong. A person who was unappealing 20 years ago will probably be unappealing 20 years later. There are, however, exceptions.

2) If the person you are attracted to is with another partner at the beginning of the film, he/she will dump that partner in favour of you. Wrong again. That person will either stay with the "wrong" partner or if he/she does dump that partner/is dumped, it will be in favour of someone else, not you.

A couple hours a I was crossing 18th St. and heard a couple of DC's Finest yelling after me.
