TASTE OF BETHESDA

Went to Taste of Bethesda yesterday.

Two of my favourites were Morton's and Ruth's Chris, although the bread on which they served their sliders overpowered the meat. Delhi Dhaba's butter chicken was good, but why did all the Indian restaurants serve virtually the same thing? One can only eat so many samosas in one day. Just Cakes Cupcakes were good, as were Ben and Jerry's and Gifford's ice cream. One cookie place (I forget which one) made reasonably good, if a little doughy "almond rounds."

The big disappointment was the Burger Joint's sliders. I LOVED the last burger I had there, however, the sliders were luke warm, served on cold bread, which minimized the flavour. We know you can do better!

THE GOLDEN COMPASS

Used my Blockbuster Rewards to rent “The Golden Compass,” for which the Catholic League called a boycott. The author of the book apparently wanted to “kill G-d,” impossible to do, and enough people took him seriously. Never mind there are references to tolerance, “free inquiry,” truth, some substance called “dust” and to prophecies. IMO no worse than the Harry Potter books, contested by the Episcopal pictures, more compelling than “the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” and lots of pretty pictures to boot.

DAY 222

Eight Myths Romantic Comedies Perpetuate:

1.You just know he's the one — and you're right: We've probably all felt this at some point, and most of us have been proven wrong.

2.Change yourself, and he'll fall head over heels: How often has the bland girl put on a dress and makeup only to dazzle the guy who didn't know her name 30 minutes ago. It's only like the entire plot of Cinderella!

3.Sex solves problems: Unless the problem is he'd like to have sex right now, then all it will provide is distraction.

4.Playing hard to get works: In reality, acting disinterested makes him think you're not interested. He may want you, but he'll probably be too scared to act.

5.If you run, he'll follow: Unless he's very confident or very clueless, he's probably not going to make a fool out of himself. Most guys would sooner sit home brokenhearted.

6.You don't need his number: He always gets the number in rom-coms, and he always calls. And if he doesn't, he has a reason that somehow will make you love him more.

7.Love changes him: Love can conquer anything, right? Pot habits. Video game obsessions. Irregular bathing. Not likely. He may change for a while, but lasting change really needs to be made for the self and not another.

8.Love knows no socioeconomic bounds: Even if we're so magnanimous that we can overlook major class, education, and money differences, there's another person's insecurities involved. Not to mention money is one of the most common things couples fight over.

From
http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/sex/8-myths-about-love-romantic-comedies-perpetuate-2097971/print

Two more myths:

1) A person who is unappealing at the beginning of the standard 90-minute feature film will be more appealing before the credit roll. Wrong. A person who was unappealing 20 years ago will probably be unappealing 20 years later. There are, however, exceptions.

2) If the person you are attracted to is with another partner at the beginning of the film, he/she will dump that partner in favour of you. Wrong again. That person will either stay with the "wrong" partner or if he/she does dump that partner/is dumped, it will be in favour of someone else, not you.

SEX TOYS...

...make better gifts than pepper spray.

janedoe@seductive.com
DAY 210

Karma's a bitch. But then sometimes not, if you generate good karma. I was moaning over how I try to treat people fairly and not cheat them and I get scrod anyhow. A couple hours a I was crossing 18th St. and heard a couple of DC's Finest yelling after me. I thought they were going to at best lecture me and at worst bust me, however, one of them wanted to let me know I dropped a couple dollars out of my bag. I was humbled.

DAY 209

In Germany, instead of telling people to get lost or take a hike, you to tell them to go where the pepper grows. I never thought of where it actually grows and had to ask the ex. He said India.

"THIS JUST IN FROM WTOP: Even though yesterday's FRIGHTENING WEATHER has passed, there is still plenty of FRIGHTENING WEATHER to be SCARED of. Today's FRIGHTENINGLY HIGH WINDS are REALLY FRIGHTENING, and possible exposure to the sun's rays is SOMETHING TO BE SCARED ABOUT. WTOP expects FRIGHTENING heat and EVEN MORE FRIGHTENING humidity to return next week. And WTOP warns everyone everywhere to be SCARED and FRIGHTENED at the possibility that a hurricane may form. Stay tuned to WTOP for information about the VERY FRIGHTENING possibility that it could rain in the future and don't forget to be COMPLETELY TERRIFIED, SCARED AND FRIGHTENED by the very thought of snow next winter."

ADOLESCENT (OR MIDDLE-AGED?) REBELLION

A guy wanted to know why I didn't open up a studio at Tyson's Corner. I explained that I grew up in Northern Virginia and that to me Tyson's Corner was everything bourgeois, stifling and boring. He said he felt the same way about the place where he grew up.

WHAT KIND OF FUTURE...

...can a kid expect to have when he's been kicked out of daycare? Being kicked out of school, college, the trailer park, the old folks' home?
DC SOLDIERS ON

Eight days after the devastating earthquake martial law as been lifted from Washington and surrounding areas. But life will never be the same again for the capital city and its people.
Day 190

D wonders why I actually did a Google search on "retarded hick" and "retarded hicks." Maybe the man has a point.

Friday, July 23, 2010

WEEK 30

Market ended on an up note. WX incredibly hot, no relief in sight. DC continues to recover from the 3.6 or whatever earthquake. It's incredible how the victim mentality has permeated our culture.

Got out of jury duty -- the woman at the court house swears US Marshalls will not escort me out of my home. Since I had more than four days with nothing to do I drove back to Pennsylvania. No one killed anyone.
Been watching "Lost" a lot. It seems most of the people on the island have issues with family and friends. That's what they need to overcome, not academic or professional shortcomings. Twenty years ago Barbara Bush said "At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a child, a friend or a parent."

DAY 186

I fled the devastation that is Washington for the safety of my ancestral homeland. There I was reunited with my mother who was seeking refuge from the heat and humidity of southwest Florida. I was able to secure food and cash donations from the good people of Western Pennsylvania to help DC rebuild. As I have a birthday coming, this was not too hard.

Monday, July 19, 2010

DAY 185

One the first working day after the devastation communication has been restored to post-quake Washington, trains are running and major airports are open.

Just as I was feeling sorry for myself I found Support 2010 DC Earthquake Victims: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=144657415549386

Some of the best posts: "I still can't talk about it. My therapist recommended paper and a box of crayons. I will try to express my trauma via pictures when I feel ready."

"The biggest concern I have is that once the media stops covering the event, the area and its victims will be forgotten and left to fend for themselves....."

"The children! What about the CHILDREN?!? Oh, won't someone PLEASE think about the CHILDREN?!?!?!"
